Whether you’re 2 or 100, oral health is important. Your mouth can say a lot about your body’s health. Lesions and other oral problems can often be early indicators of nutritional deficiencies, general infection, or systemic diseases like cancer that affect the entire body. This is one of the reasons regular dental exams are essential.
Another reason why regular dental exams are important is that even with proper brushing & flossing residual plaque on your teeth will harden and form what is known as calculus. Calculus and plaque on the tooth surface cause inflammation of the gums, which is known as gingivitis. Symptoms of gingivitis include bleeding gums when you brush & floss. Long-term gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, an advanced gum disease. Periodontitis causes loss of the supporting bone and soft tissue that attach to and anchor your teeth. Serious cases can lead to tooth loss. Avoid periodontal disease with regular dental cleanings!
Dental Cleanings
According to mouthhealthy.org, “…some 100 million Americans fail to see a dentist each year, even though regular dental examinations and good oral hygiene can prevent most dental disease.”
Between your regular dental cleanings, practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, replacing your toothbrush every three months, and by eating a balanced diet with limited between-meal snacking.
Pentino Dental recommends regular cleanings at least every six months. If you have gum or periodontal disease, you’ll need more frequent appointments.
